Youth in China Are Internationally Focused and Are Ready To Take On The World – Thank You!

12th February 2010

As part of our on-going effort to conduct more public service related research for various none-for-profit organizations in China and aboard, we have recently launched a tracking study to learn more about what the 19 to 25 year olds in this country think about domestic and International issues.

From the research results we see that Chinese youth are thinking about interacting more with rest of the world and are extremely proud of what China has achieved and are not afraid to say so (which is not the case in the past when the country was more insular and less of a global player).

We see that over 60% of the respondents say that China should reach out to share ideas and also interact more with the rest of the world. And 25% think that China is leading the way in all areas of world development which shows that they have the great confidence in what China is tackling as a world leader.

So, what concerns the local youth about their daily lives? A majority are concern about the politic, news and national issues. This shows that they are plugged into the very heart of what is driving this country which is the day-to-day challenges of running the most populated country in the world.

The economy, finance, employment and income actually played less of a role in their daily lives. This type of result shows that youth in China are more interested in current affairs than the daily necessity of living (this research was done online so it may also reflect the fact that netizens are much more engaging on broader issues here and more vocal).

And what do they do in their spare time? Looking at the data it validates that China is becoming the Internet and IT Mecca of the world. They play video and computer games more than they read books, which are probably keeping pace with rest of the world. It’s interesting that they are also very social in focus and have a taste for the arts with theatre and museum visits along with music appreciation as the fourth and fifth preference on the list. It’s also surprising how sports and fitness plays such a low priority in their lives.

And what concerns them about the world which we live in? The majority name the environment as their number one issue to no surprise. But it’s interesting that economic issues are of such lesser importance to them, this might be due to the general economic conditions in China which is growing very fast still and/or it’s just the fact that China’s youth are just as concerned about the same global issues as the rest of the world. Global citizens they are indeed.
